Stages of gum disease

Gum disease is a common condition that affects the supporting tissues around the teeth. When identified early and managed properly, it can often be stabilised and controlled. Left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss and affect the long-term success of dental treatment.

FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is gum disease?

Gum disease (periodontal disease) is caused by bacteria accumulating around the teeth and gums. It ranges from mild inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) to more advanced disease affecting the bone that supports the teeth (periodontitis).

Early stages may cause little discomfort, which is why regular assessment is important.

Who is affected by gum disease?

Gum disease is more likely if you:

  • Have inconsistent oral hygiene.
  • Smoke or vape.
  • Have a family history of gum disease.
  • Have diabetes or certain medical conditions.
  • Have crowded teeth or complex restorations.

Each patient’s risk profile is different.

What does periodontal treatment involve?

Periodontal care is tailored to the severity of disease and may include:

  • Detailed gum assessment and measurements.
  • Professional cleaning below the gum line.
  • Oral hygiene instruction and support.
  • Review and monitoring over time.

In more advanced cases, further periodontal treatment may be required to stabilise gum health.

Why does maintaining good gum health matter?

Healthy gums are essential for:

  • Keeping teeth stable.
  • Supporting crowns, bridges, veneers, and implants.
  • Preventing ongoing bone loss.
  • Ensuring the long-term success of dental treatment.

Restorative and cosmetic dentistry will only last if the gums are healthy.

Periodontal care as part of wider treatment

In some cases, gum disease must be stabilised before restorative or cosmetic treatment can begin. In others, periodontal care is carried out alongside restorative treatment to ensure the best outcome.

Planning and responsibility of care

Your treating dentist will assess your gum health and discuss any findings with you. Where periodontal disease is present, treatment is planned carefully and explained clearly.

Patient takeaway

Gum disease is common and manageable, but it requires attention. Healthy gums are the foundation of long-lasting dental care.
