How We Plan Implant Treatment with Precision

At Harcourt Dental Clinic, implant treatment is planned using a combination of 3D surface scans of your teeth and CBCT (3D) scans of your jaw. These two datasets are digitally combined to create a detailed, accurate model of your mouth. This allows us to plan treatment based on both:

The position of the teeth (what you see).
The underlying bone and anatomy (what supports the implant).

What is a 3D surface scan?

A 3D scan (using an intraoral scanner) records:

The exact shape and position of your teeth.
Your bite and how your teeth meet.
The visible structure of your mouth.

This replaces traditional impressions and provides a highly accurate digital model.

What is a CBCT scan?

A CBCT scan is a 3D radiographic image that shows:

Bone volume and density.
Position of nerves and sinuses.
Areas of infection or pathology.

This allows us to assess whether implants can be placed safely and predictably.

What is a surgical guide?

From a digital plan, a custom surgical guide can be produced.

This is a precisely manufactured template that:

Fits over your teeth.
Guides the implant into the planned position.
Helps ensure accuracy during placement.

Bringing the Scans Together

The 3D surface scan and CBCT scan are digitally aligned (“married”) to create a complete picture. This means we can plan:

Importantly, planning is done from the final result backwards — not just where bone is available.

I’ve been going to harcourt dental for many years and always had a great experience. Dr. Lorna is such a great dentist, very attentive and reassuring and provides advice on how to maintain oral health.
