Implant-retained dentures are used to improve the stability and comfort of dentures by securing them to dental implants.

They remain removable, but are supported by implants to reduce movement and improve function.

What Is an Implant-Retained Denture?

An implant-retained denture is a removable denture that attaches to a small number of dental implants placed in the jaw. The denture is designed to clip or connect onto the implants, providing additional retention and support.

When is it suitable?

Implant-retained dentures may be appropriate if:

You currently wear a denture that feels loose or unstable.
You have difficulty eating with a denture.
Your lower denture moves or lifts easily.
You want improved stability without a fully fixed solution.
You prefer a removable option that is easier to clean.

They are commonly used in both the upper and lower jaw, but are particularly beneficial in the lower jaw, where traditional dentures are often less stable.

What does the treatment involve?

Treatment is usually carried out in stages:

Assessment and planning
– Clinical examination
– Digital scans
– CBCT (3D scan) to assess bone
Implant placement
– Implants are placed in the jaw under local anaesthetic
Healing phase
– Time is allowed for the implants to integrate with the bone
Denture connection
– The denture is fitted with attachments to connect securely to the implants

In some cases, an existing denture can be adapted. In others, a new denture may be required.

Why are they helpful?

Conventional dentures rely on the shape of the gums and, in the upper jaw, suction from the palate. In the lower jaw, there is no natural suction, which can lead to movement and discomfort.

Implants provide anchor points that help:

Reduce the movement of the denture.
Improve chewing ability.
Increase confidence when speaking.
Improve overall comfort.

Less invasive than full fixed implant bridges.

About treatment

Upper vs Lower Dentures

The upper and lower jaws behave differently:

Upper dentures often benefit from the added support of the denture base to restore lip and cheek fullness.
Lower dentures tend to be less stable and often benefit significantly from implant retention.

For lower dentures, we generally recommend a minimum of two implants to improve stability.

Attachments and Maintenance

Implant-retained dentures use small attachments (locators) or a bar and clips to hold the denture in place. These components:

Provide retention.
May wear over time.
Can be replaced during maintenance visits, usually every 12-18 months.

Regular review and maintenance are important for long-term success.

Planning and responsibility of care

Implant-retained dentures are planned based on bone levels, denture design, and patient preferences. The balance between stability, aesthetics, and ease of maintenance is carefully considered.

I’ve been going to harcourt dental for many years and always had a great experience. Dr. Lorna is such a great dentist, very attentive and reassuring and provides advice on how to maintain oral health.
