What are retainers?

Retainers are custom-made appliances used to hold teeth in their new position after orthodontic or restorative treatment. Without retention, teeth have a natural tendency to move over time. Retainers help maintain the result that has been achieved.

FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why are retainers important?

After teeth have been moved or restored:

  • The surrounding bone and tissues need time to stabilise.
  • Teeth can gradually drift back towards their original position.
  • Bite relationships can change over time.

Wearing retainers is essential to protect the result of treatment.

Who are retainers suitable for?

Retainers are recommended for:

  • Patients who have completed orthodontic treatment.
  • Patients who have had Invisalign® or aligner therapy.
  • Patients who have undergone restorative treatment affecting tooth position.
  • Patients who wish to maintain alignment long-term.

Retention is considered part of treatment, not an optional extra.

What does treatment involve?

  • Digital scan of your teeth
  • Fabrication of a custom retainer
  • Fitting and instructions for use
  • Follow-up where required

Digital records allow accurate reproduction if a retainer is lost.

What are digital scans and the process for retainer replacements?

We use digital 3D scans rather than traditional impressions to record the position of your teeth.

This means:

  • Your original tooth position is stored accurately.
  • If your retainer is lost or damaged, a new one can be made from your original scan.
  • In some cases, a replacement retainer can help move teeth back if there has been minor movement.
  • Retainers can be manufactured and delivered even if you are not locally based, or the scan can be sent to a new dentist if it’s more convenient.

Unlike traditional impressions, which are often discarded over time, digital records can be retained and reused when needed.

Having a digital record of your teeth provides an added level of security, allowing retainers to be replaced accurately and efficiently if required.

How long do I need to wear a retainer?

Teeth can move throughout life.

  • Retainers are typically worn long-term.
  • Night-time wear is common after the initial period.
  • Stopping retainer use can lead to relapse.

Retention should be viewed as ongoing maintenance.

What happens if I stop wearing my retainer?

  • Teeth may begin to move.
  • Changes may be gradual and unnoticed initially.
  • In some cases, further treatment may be required to correct relapse.

Types of retainers

Removable Retainers

  • Clear plastic retainers (similar to aligners).
  • Worn at night in most cases.
  • Easy to clean and replace.

Fixed Retainers

  • A thin wire is bonded behind the front teeth.
  • Not visible from the front.
  • Provides continuous retention.

In some cases, both fixed and removable retainers are used together.

Maintenance and replacement

  • Retainers should be cleaned daily.
  • Stored safely when not in use.
  • May need replacement over time due to wear.

Having a digital scan allows a new retainer to be made quickly if needed.

Planning and responsibility of care

Retention is an important part of both orthodontic and restorative treatment planning. Maintaining tooth position helps ensure that the results of treatment remain stable over time.

Patient takeaway

Retainers are essential for maintaining the position of your teeth after treatment. Long-term wear is often required to prevent relapse and protect your result.
