Dental implants are a way to replace missing teeth by placing a small titanium post in the jawbone.

This post replaces the root of the tooth and supports a crown, bridge, or denture above it.

Once healed, the implant becomes stable within the bone, allowing a replacement tooth to be attached in a way that looks and functions similarly to a natural tooth.

FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How does dental implants work?

A dental implant has three main parts:

  • The implant itself (a titanium post placed in the bone).
  • An abutment (a connector between the implant and the tooth).
  • The final restoration (a crown, bridge, or denture).

After the implant is placed, a healing period allows the bone to integrate with the implant. This creates a stable foundation for the final restoration.

What can implants be used for?

Dental implants can be used to replace:

  • A single missing tooth.
  • Several missing teeth using an implant-supported bridge.
  • All teeth in the upper or lower jaw.
  • Dentures that need additional support and stability.

The type of restoration depends on the number of missing teeth, bone availability, and overall treatment plan.

Why replace missing teeth?

Replacing missing teeth is not only about appearance. Missing teeth can lead to:

  • Difficulty chewing.
  • Movement of neighbouring teeth.
  • Changes in the bite.
  • Bone loss in the jaw over time.

Implants can help maintain bone levels and restore function more predictably than some alternative options.

About implants

Are implants suitable for everyone?

Not all patients are immediately suitable for implant treatment. We assess:

– Bone volume and bone quality.
Gum health.
– Medical history.
– Smoking and oral hygiene.
– Bite forces and overall dental condition.

In some cases, additional procedures such as bone grafting or gum treatment may be required before implants can be placed.

A structured approach

At Harcourt Dental Clinic, implant treatment is planned collaboratively where needed, combining surgical placement with restorative planning to ensure that the final result is stable, functional, and natural in appearance.

Planning is key

Successful implant treatment depends on careful planning. This includes:

  • 3D CBCT imaging to assess bone and anatomy.
  • Digital scans to evaluate tooth position and bite.
  • Designing the final tooth position before implant placement.

Implants are planned around the final restoration, not the other way around.

Patient takeaway

Dental implants are a reliable way to replace missing teeth, but their success depends on careful assessment, planning, and long-term maintenance.
