How Do You Decide?

When replacing all teeth in the upper or lower jaw, there are two main implant-supported options:

  • A fixed implant bridge (often called a hybrid bridge).
  • An implant-retained overdenture (a removable denture supported by implants).

Both are effective solutions. The most appropriate option depends on bone levels, facial support, function, and long-term maintenance.

FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a fixed implant bridge?

A fixed implant bridge is attached securely to implants and is not removed by the patient. It may be made from:

  • Zirconia (ceramic).
  • Titanium with acrylic or composite teeth (hybrid bridge).

Fixed bridges provide a stable, tooth-like solution designed for function and durability.

What is an implant-retained overdenture?

An overdenture is removable but connects securely to implants for improved retention. It includes an acrylic base that replaces both teeth and lost gum tissue, helping restore volume and support.

What treatment does Harcourt Dental provide?

We provide both options. Both overdentures and fixed implant bridges are used regularly, and each has advantages depending on the situation. Treatment is based on:

  • Bone levels and anatomy.
  • Lip support and facial profile.
  • Bite forces.
  • Aesthetic requirements.
  • Ease of cleaning and maintenance.
  • Patient preference.

In many cases, a combination approach — such as an overdenture in the upper jaw and a fixed bridge in the lower — provides an excellent balance of aesthetics and function.

Upper vs Lower Jaw – Why They Are Different

The upper and lower jaws behave differently after tooth loss, and this often influences the most appropriate treatment.

Upper Jaw (Maxilla)

When upper teeth are lost, there is often:

  • Loss of bone and soft tissue.
  • Reduced support for the lips and cheeks.
  • A more “sunken” appearance.

Upper vs Lower Jaw – Why They Are Different

Lower Jaw (Mandible)

The lower jaw behaves differently:

  • There is no natural suction to stabilise a denture.
  • Dentures often move during eating and speaking.
  • The ridge is often narrower and less stable.

Maintenance and Longevity

Both options require ongoing care.

  • Fixed bridges require careful cleaning around implants.
  • Overdentures require removal and cleaning, and attachments may need periodic replacement.

Long-term success depends on good hygiene and regular maintenance.

Planning and Responsibility of Care

Full-arch implant treatment requires careful planning to balance aesthetics, function, and long-term stability. Where appropriate, treatment is planned collaboratively to ensure the final result is both natural in appearance and durable over time.

Patient takeaway

Both fixed implant bridges and implant-retained dentures are reliable options. The most suitable approach depends on your anatomy, functional needs, and aesthetic goals — particularly the differences between the upper and lower jaw.
