Veneers and composite bonding are both used to improve the appearance of teeth, but they differ in how they are made, how long they last, and how much tooth structure is involved.

The right option depends on your teeth, your bite, and what you would like to achieve.

What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding uses tooth-coloured resin that is carefully shaped and bonded directly to the tooth. It is a minimally invasive way to improve tooth shape, close small gaps, and repair chips or wear. Composite bonding does not usually require drilling and can often be completed in a single visit.

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin coverings placed on the front surface of teeth. They can be made from porcelain or composite and are custom-designed to improve colour, shape, and symmetry.

Porcelain veneers are made in a laboratory, while composite veneers are built directly on the tooth.

Treatment options

When composite bonding may be the better option

Composite bonding may be suitable if you:

  • Want a conservative, minimally invasive approach.
  • Have minor chips, wear, or spacing.
  • Are you looking for a reversible option?
  • Prefer a lower initial cost.
  • Are happy to accept some maintenance over time.

Composite bonding is often an excellent first step, particularly in younger patients or early tooth wear.

Treatment options

When veneers may be more appropriate

Veneers may be recommended if you:

  • Have more significant changes in shape or colour.
  • Want a longer-lasting solution.
  • Have teeth that are already worn or restored.
  • Require higher aesthetic refinement.
  • Want improved stain resistance.

Porcelain veneers, in particular, offer excellent aesthetics and durability when carefully planned.

Longevity and maintenance

Composite bonding may need periodic polishing, repair, or replacement over time. Porcelain veneers are more resistant to staining and wear but still require care and regular review. Good oral hygiene, bite management, and ongoing maintenance are important for both options.

Key differences at a glance

Composite bonding Veneers
Minimally invasive May involve some tooth preparation
Often completed in one visit Usually requires multiple visits
Repairable More durable and stain-resistant
Requires maintenance Longer-lasting
Lower initial cost Higher initial investment

Planning and responsibility of care

Choosing between veneers and composite bonding requires careful assessment of tooth wear, bite forces, and long-term expectations.

Your dentist will discuss the available options with you and explain what is appropriate for your teeth. Where treatment involves higher aesthetic demands, worn teeth, or changes to the bite, Dr Kevin Gilmore will be involved in reviewing the planning to help ensure a balanced, natural, and durable result.

Patient takeaway

Neither option is “better” in isolation. The best results come from choosing the right treatment for the right teeth, with a clear understanding of maintenance and longevity.
