After Root Canal: Post-Op Instructions

Root canal treatment removes infection from inside the tooth and allows it to be saved.

It is normal for the tooth and surrounding area to feel different for a short time afterwards.

What to expect after treatment

It is common to experience:

Mild tenderness or soreness when biting.
Sensitivity around the treated tooth.
Slight discomfort in the surrounding gum.

This usually settles over a few days.

How should I manage pain after treatment?

Take any recommended pain relief as advised.
Avoid chewing hard foods on the treated tooth initially.
Discomfort should gradually improve rather than worsen.

If pain increases significantly or does not improve, please contact the clinic.

What should I know about temporary fillings or crowns?

Temporary fillings or crowns

Many root-treated teeth are sealed with a temporary filling.
Avoid chewing sticky or hard foods on the tooth.
Temporary materials are not designed for long-term use.

It is important to return for the planned permanent restoration.

When can I eat and drink normally again?

Eating and drinking

Avoid eating until the numbness has worn off.
Chew on the opposite side where possible.
Stick to softer foods for the first day or two.

How do I care for my teeth after treatment?

Oral hygiene

Continue brushing and flossing as normal.
Brush gently around the treated tooth.
Good hygiene supports healing and reduces the risk of reinfection.

Importance of final restoration

Root canal treatment treats the infection but does not strengthen the tooth. Many root-treated teeth require a crown or other protective restoration to reduce the risk of fracture. This will be discussed and planned with you.

When to contact the clinic

Increasing pain after several days.
Swelling of the gum or face.
A bad taste or discharge.
The temporary filling or crown comes out.

I’ve been going to harcourt dental for many years and always had a great experience. Dr. Lorna is such a great dentist, very attentive and reassuring and provides advice on how to maintain oral health. I’ve had other procedures with their oral surgeon and endodontist such as extractions and root canals and all have been very good. Very happy with them.

Lorna from Harcourt Dental Clinic is amazing. Her approach to managing my teeth is brilliant, I am 58, with a mount full of large filings and Lorna's work has made such improvements. She is so professional and communicates really well, setting out a plan.
