FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What to do immediately after an extraction?

  • Bite firmly on the gauze provided for 20–30 minutes.
  • Do not rinse your mouth for the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid touching the area with your tongue or fingers.
  • Take any prescribed medication as advised.

A small amount of bleeding is normal in the first few hours.

How to manage bleeding, pain and swelling?

If bleeding continues:

  • Bite on fresh gauze or a clean handkerchief for 20 minutes
  • Sit upright and avoid lying flat
  • Avoid rinsing or spitting

If bleeding does not settle, contact the practice.

Pain and Swelling

  • Some discomfort is normal once the anaesthetic wears off.
  • Take pain relief as advised (usually ibuprofen and/or paracetamol).
  • Mild swelling may occur, particularly with more complex extractions.

Applying a cold compress to the outside of the face can help reduce swelling.

Is there any restrictions on eating or drinking after an extraction?

Yes, certainly. Here are some tips.

  • Avoid eating until the numbness has worn off.
  • Start with soft foods on the opposite side.
  • Avoid hot food and drinks for the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours.

Gradually return to normal eating as comfort allows.

How long does it take to heal?

  • The gum will begin to heal over the first 1–2 weeks.
  • Deeper healing of the bone takes longer.
  • Stitches (if placed) may dissolve or be removed.

Mild discomfort should gradually improve over a few days.

Things to Avoid

  • Smoking (especially in the first few days).
  • Vigorous rinsing or spitting.
  • Drinking through a straw.
  • Heavy exercise for 24–48 hours.

These can disturb the blood clot and delay healing.
