Implant-retained dentures are removable dentures that are secured in place using dental implants.

They provide significantly greater stability than conventional dentures, particularly in the lower jaw, where dentures often feel loose.

They combine the security of implants with the practicality of a removable denture.

What is the treatment?

Small dental implants are placed into the jawbone. Once healed, special attachment components are fitted to the implants. The denture then clips securely onto these attachments.

The denture remains removable for cleaning but is far more stable during eating and speaking.

FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who is it suitable for?

Implant-retained dentures may be suitable if you:

  • Have a full denture that feels loose or unstable.
  • Struggle with lower denture retention.
  • Want improved chewing confidence.
  • Are medically suitable for minor implant surgery.
  • Prefer a removable but secure solution.

Each case is assessed individually, including bone quality and overall health.

Why are lower dentures often unstable?

Upper dentures benefit from suction against the palate.

Lower dentures do not have this advantage and rely largely on gravity and muscle control.

For this reason, we typically recommend at least two implants in the lower jaw to significantly improve stability and comfort.

What does treatment involve?

Treatment is usually staged:

  • Assessment and 3D CBCT planning.
  • Placement of implants.
  • Healing period.
  • Fitting of attachment components.
  • Modification or fabrication of the implant-retained denture.

In some cases, existing dentures can be adapted.

Limitations

Limitations to understand:

  • Attachments wear over time and require replacement.
  • Daily cleaning around implants is essential.
  • Regular maintenance visits are important.

Implant-retained dentures are more stable but still require care.

Considerations

Maintenance considerations

Attachment components (such as locator inserts) naturally wear and may need periodic replacement. This is normal, usually between 12 and 24 months.

Good hygiene and routine review appointments are essential to maintain gum and bone health around implants.

Implant-retained dentures vs fixed implant bridges

Implant-retained dentures:

  • Are removable.
  • Usually requires fewer implants.
  • Are more cost-effective.

Fixed implant bridges:

  • Are permanently fixed.
  • Require more implants.
  • Provide a non-removable solution.

The appropriate option depends on bone levels, preference, and long-term planning.

Planning and responsibility of care

Implant-retained dentures require careful planning to ensure implant positioning, bite stability, and long-term comfort.

Implant placement and restoration are coordinated carefully. Where treatment forms part of a wider restorative or bite rehabilitation plan, Dr Kevin Gilmore oversees the restorative planning to ensure long-term stability and predictable outcomes.

Patient takeaway

Implant-retained dentures offer a secure, practical solution for unstable dentures, particularly in the lower jaw. With proper planning and maintenance, they can significantly improve comfort and confidence.
