How long do restorations last?

The lifespan of dental restorations varies and depends on:

  • Size and position of the restoration.
  • Bite forces and habits, such as clenching.
  • Oral hygiene.
  • Ongoing maintenance and review.

No restoration lasts forever, but good planning and care can significantly extend longevity.

FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a cracked tooth?

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, a cracked tooth and a fractured tooth are not always the same thing, and they can behave very differently.

A cracked tooth has a fine crack within the tooth structure that has not caused a piece of the tooth to break away.

  • The crack is often invisible.
  • Pain may come and go, especially when biting or releasing.
  • Symptoms can be difficult to localise.
  • The tooth may still be intact and saveable.

With early diagnosis, cracked teeth can often be protected before the crack worsens.

What is a fractured tooth?

A fractured tooth involves loss of tooth structure, where part of the tooth has broken away.

  • A visible piece of tooth may be missing.
  • Sensitivity or pain is often more constant.
  • The damage is usually more advanced.
  • Treatment is often more involved.

The extent and direction of the fracture determine whether the tooth can be restored.

Why the distinction matters?

Cracks often develop slowly over time, whereas fractures represent a later stage where the tooth has already failed structurally. Early intervention can sometimes prevent a crack from becoming a fracture.

How cracked and fractured teeth are managed:

  • Cracked teeth may be protected with crowns or stabilising restorations.
  • Fractured teeth may require crowns, root canal treatment, or extraction.
  • Bite assessment is critical to prevent recurrence
  • Early assessment improves the chances of saving the tooth.

What does long-term maintenance involve after dental treatment or restorations?

Maintenance may include:

Small interventions carried out early can often prevent larger problems later.

About fractures

Why do teeth fracture?

Teeth can fracture when they are weakened or placed under excessive load. Common reasons include tooth wear, large fillings that reduce the strength of the remaining tooth, repeated grinding or clenching, and biting on hard foods or objects.

Our approach to long-term care

Our focus is on maintaining restorations proactively rather than reacting to failure. By monitoring restorations over time and addressing issues early, we aim to protect both your teeth and any existing dental work for as long as possible.

Patient takeaway

Not all tooth damage is the same. Detecting and treating cracks early can help prevent more serious fractures and more extensive treatment.
